What Is the Affidavit of Support?
Form I-864 is a legal contract between a financial sponsor and the U.S. government. It's required for most family-based immigration cases. The sponsor must demonstrate income at or above 125% of the federal poverty guideline for their household size.
The I-864 requires detailed financial information including tax returns, W-2s, pay stubs, and proof of assets. Errors in income calculation or missing documentation are common reasons family-based cases get delayed.
What If the Sponsor Doesn't Earn Enough?
A joint sponsor (a separate person who meets the income requirement) can file their own I-864. Alternatively, household members can contribute income via Form I-864A. Assets like savings or property can also be counted at 3x the income shortfall.
